An open letter to Speaker Michael Martin PDF Print E-mail
Dear Mr Speaker,
As Parliament continues to be dragged down by the allowance system, and its rules, the role of those in public service across the country is being undermined.
We are Liberal Democrat candidates seeking to be elected to Parliament and yet we find ourselves disappointed, and frustrated, at the way in which this matter is being handled. Every day our residents are telling us loudly that this must stop and this must stop now.

Am I sure I want to join the "club of scoundrels"? PDF Print E-mail

Last night my Dad rang me all concerned about my career choices. I stood in the general election of 2005 and am planning to be the Liberal Democrat candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn at the next election – whenever it comes.

My Dad’s concern was pretty simple: why would I want to join a club of such scoundrels, hasn’t the career of politician been devalued and he was concerned that people get caught up in the maelstrom of the noise and the club-atmosphere and accept as the norm what in fact is wrong.

Big-name Businessmen rally against Heathrow Third Runway PDF Print E-mail

A group of some of the most influential businessmen in the UK including chief executives at Sainsbury's, Carphone Warehouse and Kingfisher have spoken out against the Government’s plans to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

In an open letter they argue that the environmental concerns of the third runway outweigh the economic benefits - a direct challenge to the Government’s announcements earlier this year which stated that the economic benefits were greater. They also announced that they will be forming a lobby group to fight the plans.

Chief Executive of Kingfisher Ian Cheshire said in an interview with the Guardian: “The motivation is that the debate up to now has been based on the assumption that anyone who is in business must be in favour. What became clear is that people privately felt it [opposition] and weren’t sure how to kick it off.”

People gather for the anniversary commemorations at Bergen-Belsen.Reflections on attending the anniversary of the liberation of the camp at Bergen-Belsen

The adage about complacency is well know, but it was a saying that was at the forefront of my thoughts as I visited the concentration and prisoner of war camp of Bergen-Belsen this weekend.

It was the anniversary of the liberation and so had a particular series of events and memorials – but for me it was a very personal pilgrimage.

My grandfather was in the liberation relief forces in those hot days of April 1945 when the camp was handed over by the Germans.  The sight and the state of what they found was to shock the world.

Ed sets out his commitments on MPs expenses PDF Print E-mail
Statement of commitments on the issues of MPs’ Expenses.
  1. I live in the constituency – it’s the least residents can expect from their local MP.  I will never claim for a second home. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for second homes of London MPs.
  2. I will never employ members of my family.  My staff will be appointed on merit, not on connections and they will have to work hard to justify their salary.
  3. I will voluntarily publish my accounts so that constituents can see where their money is going.
  4. I will vote to abolish the infamous "John Lewis List" and for independent spot checks on MPs accounts.
  5. I believe that staff employed by MPs should in fact be House of Commons staff and their pay and conditions should be determined under Civil Service terms.  It is not fair that office staff are used as a political football.
  6. I do not believe that MPs pay and expenses should be set by MPs.

Tom Simon wins Belsize for the Lib Dems PDF Print E-mail

Belsize victoryThe Liberal Democrats have pulled off a stunning by-election win in the Belsize Ward.

Tom Simon (Lib Dem) 1136
Conservative 952
Labour 270
Green 109

Majority 184

The scale of the result means the Lib Dems increased their majority, share of the vote and number of people voting for them - even when turnout fell by 10%.

The Tories had let it be known that they had been caught unawares when Alexis Rowell and Arthur Graves captured the seat in 2006.  They fought a strong campaign this time - but it resulted in a worse result.
