After one week of the General Election campaign the country's major news organisations have put Lib Dem Ed Fordham in pole position to take the Labour seat of Hampstead and Kilburn. BBC point to 1.1% (474) gap between Labour and Lib Dems
The BBC puts the Lib Dems in a strong second place.

BBC, Sky News, ITV, The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Guardian have all said the Lib Dems are 474 votes behind Labour in this seat.

These authoritative positions reinforce the long standing view among General Election analysts and experts that the Lib Dems present the major threat to Labour here.

This widespread backing presents a problem to the local Conservative campaign.  They are trying to break out of third place by pretending they are already in second, using figures from the 2008 'Ken vs Boris' mayoral election. Most experts recognise that the particular personalities in the Mayoral race make it a poor guide to General Election performance.

The non-aligned local blog NorthWest6 concluded:

"the Conservatives' assertion that only they can beat Labour in Hampstead and Kilburn is misleading. The Lib Dems' claim to be the main challenger is supported by independent evidence. Labour is playing up the Conservatives' challenge because it calculates that fear of the Conservatives is more likely to make wavering Labour voters keep the faith than fear of the Liberal Democrats."
